Today, the outage of CrowdStrike has revealed a horrifying truth.
There is a company called Crowdstrike which provides a security system called Falcon. It works in conjunction with Microsoft Windows Defender Software and strengthens the security of your system. It prevents any security attack. It prevents malware attacks. It helps in monitoring and controlling malicious traffic.
Today, an update of this software came out and there must have been some flaw in it. Because of that, the system in which this new version was installed went into system recovery mode. It started showing BSOD and started rebooting.
Due to this, crores of systems across the world went down... Servers of lakhs of companies went down... Domain Servers went down.. DNS, DHCP down... Apps servers went down...... due to which banking, airlines, government services, media, TV, financial services went down across the world...... although a large number of systems are still up... but these too can go down anytime... as soon as Crowdstrike update comes on them.
The company has come to know about this and its patch is being made.. which is going to be rolled out globally in a few minutes... then in a few hours this update will come on Windows systems across the world and the problem will be fixed.
There is another solution to this... by doing registry editing.... but only individual users can do that..... Corporate users will have to wait for the instructions of their IT team.
Today's issue is sure to cause losses of several trillion dollars across the world.
But look at another aspect of this.... all our communication is in the hands of a few companies.... it is dependency.
What if tomorrow Windows, Facebook, Whatsapp, or any network provider stops giving you service for any reason... or some hacker exploits some vulnerability in their system and all these stop working... then what will you do?
You will not be able to use your system... you will not be able to use your phone... you will not be able to use banking... you will not be able to use taxi or flight... you will not be able to order daily necessities.
This is not a figment of imagination... this is what is happening today... two years ago a small experiment was done in Russia... when overnight all the companies stopped operating there.
